In January, we have the day of birth and the day of the death of the first and only cosmonaut of independent Ukraine - Leonid Kadenyuk.

Leonid Kadenyuk is the Ukrainian test pilot of the first class, Major General of Aviation, cosmonaut, member of parliament of Ukraine of the 4th convocation, President of the Aerospace Agency of Ukraine, Hero of Ukraine, People's Ambassador of Ukraine, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine and Head of the State Space Agency, Honorary Doctor of Chernivtsi National University named after Yu. Fedkovych.

From November 19 to December 5, 1997, he made a space flight on the American shuttle Columbia mission STS-87. During the mission, he performed biological experiments to study the effect of weightlessness on plant physiology. The data obtained are of great importance for future missions, including the creation of colonies on the Moon and Mars.

Leonid Kadenyuk is the author of five scientific works and the popular science book "Mission - Space".
